Selfishness within a marriage, ultimately leads to divorce if not dealt with. The Word of YHVH says in Mark 10:6-8 AMP “But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. [Gen. 1:27; 5:2.] For this reason a man shall leave [behind] his father and his mother and be joined to his wife and cleave closely to her permanently, And the two shall become one flesh, so that they are no longer two, but one flesh. [Gen. 2:24.]”
Selfishness has no place in a marriage God called a husband to become one with his wife, selfishness is poison to a relationship. There are different reasons why couples get divorce but when we look at the root cause you will find that it’s because of selfishness and the root cause of selfishness is Pride.
Becoming one means one in heart, mind and flesh your desires are now God’s desire for both your lives so they would the same desire. It takes a completely selfless person to love as Jesus instructed us to love one another, love our neighbors as we love ourselves and a husband to love his wife as Christ loves the Church (John 15:12, Matthew 22:39 & Ephesians 5:25).
In order for a marriage to be successful it needs two selfless people, each valuing the needs of the other above their own. True love has no room for selfish ambition. True love is not envious, it’s not boastful, it’s not arrogant, it’s not rude, it’s not irritable or resentful. True love bears all things, it believes all things, it hopes in all things, it endures all things (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).
God’s way of loving means we need to be delivered from the spirit of pride and lay aside our selfish ambitions, because no greater love has no one than to lay down their life for another, like Messiah did for us.
“For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.” James 3:16 NKJV
