Keeping The Spirit Of The Law (Torah) Produces Life

“But now we are discharged from the Law and have terminated all intercourse with it, having died to what once restrained and held us captive. So now we serve not under [obedience to] the old code of written regulations, but [under obedience to the promptings] of the Spirit in newness [of life].” Romans 7:6 AMP

When Paul says that we are no longer bound to the law he is speaking in a physical sense, but we are to keep the spirit of the law which produces life and enables us to produce good deeds for YHWH. In order for us to be able to do this we have to die to our sinful nature our flesh, so we have to die with Messiah for this to take place (Romans 7:4; 8:2, Galatians 2:19; 5:18).

Colossians 2:14 says “having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.” This is simply saying that the sinful charges against us was nailed to the cross with Christ and the rules and regulations that condemned us have also been removed by the death of Messiah and that is what has set us free from the letter of the law of sin and death and we now keep the spirit of the law, because we are now dead to the physical aspect of the law.

When you are still alive to sin you are still bound to the law of sin and death, many believers who say that the law has been done away with and are still alive to sin are bound to the law and don’t even know it.

Apostle Paul says that when we are flesh being controlled  by our sinful nature, the law arouses the sinful nature within us (Romans 7:5, James 1:15) hence producing sinful deeds that results in death. But now through Christ we are now dead to the law. So the law if not dead or done away with it’s still alive and relevant for today but we are dead to it. When we die to the law that’s when we are no longer held captive to it’s power and we can freely serve God by living in the spirit (Romans 7:6)

The Law is just YHWH’s instructions to us of what is sinful, Apostle Paul said it was the law that revealed his sin to him (Romans 7:7). The Law (God’s instructions) is good but sin uses the law which is good to deceive us and keep us bound, but through the Sacrifice of Messiah we have been set free from the power of the law of sin and death.

God’s law is good and holy but it’s sin that uses what is good to bring about our condemnation to death. So, you see how terrible sin really is, it uses God’s good commands for its own evil purposes (Romans 7:13). So the trouble is not with the law, for it is spiritual, holy and good. The trouble is with us when we are walking in the flesh because then we are still slave to sin and hence bound to power that the law of sin and death has over the flesh through sin.

“So I find it to be the rule, a kind of perverse “torah,” that although I want to do what is good, evil is right there with me! For in my inner self I completely agree with God’s Torah; but in my various parts, I see a different “torah,” one that battles with the Torah in my mind and makes me a prisoner of sin’s “torah,” which is operating in my various parts. What a miserable creature I am! Who will rescue me from this body bound for death? Thanks be to God [, he will]! – through Yeshua the Messiah, our Lord! To sum up: with my mind, I am a slave of God’s Torah; but with my old nature, I am a slave of sin’s “Torah.”  Romans 7:21-25 CJB
